{"id":50,"date":"2010-01-14T17:38:29","date_gmt":"2010-01-15T00:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.deansmailing.com\/rationalmarketing\/?p=50"},"modified":"2010-02-13T15:51:03","modified_gmt":"2010-02-13T22:51:03","slug":"new-statistics-about-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deansmailing.com\/rationalmarketing\/index.php\/2010\/01\/new-statistics-about-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"New Statistics About Mail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent article in <a title=\"Target Marketing Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.targetmarketingmag.com\/article\/when-you-should-consider-using-direct-mail-150105_1.html \" target=\"_blank\">Target Marketing Magazine<\/a> titled To Mail or Not to Mail author Pat Friesen cited some surprising statistics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-six percent of Americans surveyed by InnoMedia say <strong>receiving mail is a pleasure<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSixty-seven percent of Americans feel traditional mail is <strong>more personal <\/strong>than Internet communications, according to research from the U.S. Postal Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong Gen Yers (born 1977-1994) and Gen Xers (born 1965-1976), more than <strong>70 percent sort their mail immediately<\/strong> reports the USPS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young consumers invest time <\/strong>with their <a title=\"Dean's Mailing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.deansmailing.com\" target=\"_blank\">direct mail<\/a> knowing it is advertising. They are motivated to receive information to help make buying decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies show direct mail is favorably received by young consumers because <strong>it&#8217;s tangible<\/strong>-they keep and browse through catalogs; <strong>it&#8217;s private<\/strong>-there&#8217;s an advantage to NOT being able to forward it to everyone in someone else&#8217;s address book; and <strong>it&#8217;s secure<\/strong>-58 percent still prefer receiving and paying bills by mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people who are more comfortable receiving and responding to direct mail than e-mail, even when they have e-mail addresses. For example, marketers of products and services for older seniors (75+), continue to use <a title=\"Dean's Mailing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.deansmailing.com\" target=\"_blank\">direct mail <\/a>to generate leads and sales. These seniors are motivated readers that open and keep direct mail. NOTE: Don&#8217;t assume that because you have e-mail addresses for any age group, e-mail is the preferred medium for hearing from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMail is more private than e-mail according to 66 percent of those participating in a recent U.S. Postal Service study. They said the <strong>Internet is not a substitute for mail<\/strong>.
